I must admit, when I first heard the concept of Disney’s Elena of Avalor, I was apprehensive. I was afraid that the fact that it was inspired by Latin culture would make the show a “stereotype”. Boy, was I wrong. While Elena is a crown-wearing, gown-donning Disney Princess, she’s also a guitar-playing, butt-kicking role model for young ladies everywhere. The show is inspired by Latin culture, boasts beautiful music and even throws in a couple of Spanish words for good measure, but what most surprised me is the fact that Elena of Avalor is not just for kids. This show can be enjoyed by the entire family. Every member of my family could learn something from Elena, and that is huge!
Now I have people asking me, “Why do you love Elena of Avalor so much?” Oh, let me count the ways…
Elena Castillo Flores is:
- A Role Leader
…but above all, Elena loves and respects her family. For the first time, my family has a Disney Princess that we can truly relate to. Not only can we relate to her hair, skin, eyes and surnames, but we can also relate to her beliefs and values. Elena is a Princess inspired by Latin culture and bound by the love she has for her family. Elena is a great example for girls and boys of all ages. Elena embodies and encompasses the many values that my grandparents instilled in me and that I am now instilling in my daughter.
Recently, I had the honor of meeting head writer/co-producer of Elena of Avalor, Silvia Olivas (a LATINA!), at the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration “On-The-Road”: Puerto Rico. While at this event, Silvia shared with us that Elena’s grandparents, Francisco and Luisa, were inspired by her very own grandparents. She shared with us that Francisco played the guitar just like her grandfather once did and that it greatly influenced her writing and the characters of this show. Watching the interaction between Elena and her grandparents in this show really touched me. You see, I was also very close to and inspired by my grandparents as a child and young adult. I was incredibly touched by the relationship Elena shares with her grandparents, as it is similar to the one I shared with mine. My grandparents not only raised me but are the greatest influencers in my life!
My “abuelitos” (grandparents) came to the United States via Cuba in the late 1960’s. They came here with their daughter, a dream and no money. Within a few years, my grandparents showed they were “ready to rule” by having their own home, a thriving self-owned business and their United States citizenship. My grandparents were strong, fearless, hard-working and daring LEADERS. Remind you of anyone?
My grandfather, the “King” of our family always reminded me that I could do anything I put my mind to and that I would always know when I was “ready” to pursue one of my dreams. They never gave up on their dreams, worked hard to achieve them and led a strong family-business for over 35 years. They created all of this with their perseverance, sweat and hard work. No one “handed” them the crown. They had to prove that they were ready to rule, and they did. Elena will also need to prove that she is “ready to rule” and I believe she will!
My abuelitos taught me all I know and for that I am forever grateful. I hope to be able to teach my daughter the same sense of leadership that they taught me, and I’m happy that I now have an animated ally that can help me do so. I think all young ladies and gentlemen can learn from Elena, regardless of ethnicity.
To help celebrate the premiere of Disney’s Elena of Avalor, we partnered with Disney and DiMe Media to host an amazing In-Home Royal Viewing Party!
